Who doesn’t dream of a perfect world with less worries of physical appearance. A world where everyone looks perfect and the crime rate is low to almost zero. That’s what this film is about. Normal people living there lives behind their surrogates. The owner can sculpt the surrogate to look anyway they want while they stay home and control the robot through daily activities. No more pressures to work hard to be beautiful just charge up your surrogate. Well, Agent Thomas Greer (Bruce Willis), hates the new world. He thrives for human contact especially from his wife, Maggie Greer (Rosamund Pike). He believes the surrogates are drawing him farther away from his wife and other humans. A terrible crime happens when there is a death of a surrogate. The big shocker is that the owner is deceased as well, which is impossible. Anything can happen to the surrogate without any harm to the owner. Agent Greer must uncover the murder before the next one happens. Can Greer solve the mystery? Does this crime lead to the extinction of the surrogate race?

Review:

I loved this film. Not only is Bruce Willis very handsome but I love his typecast cop roles. Whether it’s a drunk, a show off, or a has-been cop, Willis always delivers. I love the concept of living life through surrogates. Who doesn’t wish that they don’t have to work so hard to look good and keep a great body or be ashamed because you have neither. Even though, the world seems perfect, I enjoyed the need of Agent Greer wanting human interaction again. I saw it as, Greer telling his wife that, “no matter how you look, you are still perfect in my eyes and I want that human connection again”. Of course, I’m paraphrasing this poetic example. This film has great action sequences from high jumping surrogates in car chases to non-surrogate riot attacks on the city. The makeup artists and effects team did a wonderful job on the surrogates and also on the owners. For example, Greer’s surrogate has very smooth skin with no wrinkles or age marks and the owner looks like regular Bruce. Then it switches with Agent Greer’s superior, Stone (Boris Kodjoe) whose surrogate looks like regular Boris just with a little make up added. But the owner of Stone’s surrogate, looks like a witch from a fairytale with yellow gingivitis teeth, moles and sores on his face, and aging tens years older. Good job. I enjoyed the action, the concept, the meaning behind it and the ending. I will buy this film.

  1. Interesting review Nicole. I guess everyone has their own style but the text seems to missing some structure.

Out of general curiosity: What do you like about Bruce Willis as an actor?
