Avengers: Infinity War – A Spoiler Free Review

“Fun isn’t something one considers when balancing the universe…..but this…..does put a smile on my face.”

Thanos says it best. Marvel films may not be realistic or overly serious but there is one thing that they almost always guarantee; fun. Infinity War is no different.

Avengers:Infinity War is the culmination of 10 years work over 18 seperate films. It brings together characters from literally across the universe and ties up everything we have seen from the MCU so far. Every action sequence, hollywood A-Lister and CGI killer robot all lead to this very moment. So, was it worth the wait? Hell yeah it was!

Firstly, lets get the plot out of the way without ruining the surprises. Thanos, the mad titan, is hell-bent on combining the 6, all powerful Infinity Stones so he can carry about mass genocide and wipe out half of the beings in the universe. Over the course of the past 18 films we have already seen 5 of these stones and so obviously his quest was going to bring him into conflict with a great many of the heroes we love; including Iron Man, Captain America, The Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor. It doesn’t take long for Thanos to aquire a few of the shiny little rocks and then head on over to earth to seek out the rest, eventually arriving in Wakanda for the final face off with earths mightiest heroes. The film seemlessly links together storylines from Guradians of the Galaxy, Captain America Civil War and Thor Ragnarok in effortless fashion and the ending is a satisfying cliffhanger that leaves you desperate for Avengers 4.

It’s difficult to say too much without spoiling anything, and there is a lot to spoil, so I won’t dwell on specific scenes or possible deaths. Instead I’ll take a broader look. Over its 2 hour 29 minute run time, Infinity War does a fantastic job of merging everything together and provide the much anticipated climax to the last 10 years work. Thanos is the villian the MCU finally deserves with his almost immeasurable powers mixing with a human side that gives the character a real weight and feeling while still making an unpredictable force. Josh Brolin does a sterling job as the mad titan, displaying real emotion behind all that CGI, purple chin. The rest of the cast also do a fantastic job (as we have all come to expect), wheather it be with witty one-liners or fast paced action scenes, they all play thier parts and bounce off of each other in ways comic book nerds have always dreamed of. Special mention to Robert Downey Jr, Tom Holland and Dave Bautista who all lend real wit and warmth to the gloom that is Thanos’ power. Downey is especially spectacular with both his quick-fire jokes (look out for the Spongebob reference) and emotional insecurity displaying once again how he is at the heart of everything good in the MCU.

So, the final verdict: Is Infinity War the climax (at least the first part) that we have been waiting 10 years for? In short, yes! Its full of witty humour, emotional dialogue and, above all else, just sheer fun and excitement. Exactly what a superhero film should be. I for one can not wait for Part 2.

  1. Great review! Talking about Infinity War and it’s plot without spoiling anything is a challenge! But you did well, managing to still give an insightful look into the film.
