The Wrestler

The Wrestler, which resurrected the career of Mickey Rourke, gave my props for the year’s best director to Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream). Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood both gave outstanding performances, and the acting of Rourke gained the movie a Golden Globe (Best Actor) and an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, though losing, somehow, to Sean Penn and his portrayal of Harvey Milk. This Dramatic tale is set to make you cry and to feel the healing power of an Aronofsky film.Robin Radzinski, stage name Randy “The Ram” Robinson, is going through life as a late-40’s wrestler whose heyday was in the 1980’s. The movie moves through Randy’s life as he begins to try to recreate him and his daughter’s relationship, tries to get back into life as a winner, and tries to woo the woman he loves, a stripper at a local joint. As the story progresses, you feel worse and worse for the hopeful hero, and then watch as everything he accomplished becomes another startling problem. The most powerful event in the whole movie was when he and his daughter were walking down the boardwalk, and his eyes began to tear up, and as he looked at her, he blinked, and a singular tear rolled down his cheek. Perfection in camerawork. One aspect isn’t enough to throw out to readers for this movie. The direction: phenomenal. The acting: second to none. The screenplay: The best of the year. The camerawork: near perfect. Everything about this movie was motivational and beautiful. Music makes everything in a movie, and this movie seriously delivers. I’m not a fan of Bruce Springsteen, but the song that he made for the movie was excellent, and the music and even the costume design and effects struck out as realistic and perfect. This movie shook me emotionally and cinematically, showing me how good a drama can be. I suggest that everyone see this movie, regardless of how they like movies. This movie, to me, should have received Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay.
