Movie and Film Reviews (MFR) Drama Seven Pounds (2008)

Seven Pounds (2008)

This movie stars Will Smith as Ben Thomas, an IRS agent, in this dark, emotional drama.  The movie starts with Ben Thomas calling in his own suicide.  As the film progresses, the audience learns why Ben pursues suicide.

Under the identity of his brother, Ben Thomas gets to know seven strangers with different medical/health conditions.  In his search of redemption, Ben inadvertently falls in love with Emily (played by Rosario Dawson).  As Ben struggles with himself, he follows through with his original plan and changes the lives of seven complete strangers.

“Seven Pounds” is very slow at first, but Will Smith delivers a fantastic dramatic performance in this film.  Will Smith kept me drawn in, even when I had no idea what was going on.  Almost half way through the movie, it starts to make sense and you can put the pieces together and “catch up” with the story.  This is one that will require uninterrupted focus.

The previews don’t really explain what this movie is about, but it was really moving.  Throughout the movie, it’s hard to tell if Ben Thomas is a good guy or a bad guy.  He definitely has a hidden secret that isn’t revealed until the end.  If you don’t see it coming, the ending will surprise you.  It’s an incredible ending that will leave you thinking differently about Ben Thomas.

I really enjoyed this movie once I got about halfway through it.  Now that I know what happens, I am tempted to watch it again and hopefully the beginning won’t be so confusing the second time around.  Will Smith is fantastic and is growing on me as a dramatic actor.  Overall, the film is amazing.
