Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)

“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” is Edgar Wright’s (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) newest film starring Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim, a 22 year-old slacker living in Toronto, Canada. Scott meets Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), the girl of his dreams…literally, and he soon finds out the only way to get with Ramona is to defeat her seven evil exes in battle. Edgar Wright’s choice of Michael Cera still confuses me, although Cera did better in this film than any of his other films, he doesn’t have the personality to keep you entertained throughout the whole thing, but he doesn’t have to. Edgar Wright created a visual masterpiece and even if you don’t like the film you will walk out knowing you just witnessed something original and unique.

Scott Pilgrim is a fun character but he does try to make you hate him. Scott is a jerk to girls, he’s lazy, and he just whines and complains through most of the film, which isn’t really a problem until about half way through the film. This is where the movie almost lost me, they just start rushing everything. The battles with some of the exes last less than a couple minutes and just felt like filler until Scott reached the final battle. It was really disappointing because the first half was incredible.

The visuals were the saving grace of the film, because even after losing interest in the main character Wright pulls those amazing visuals out again and gets you back into it. The look of the film wasn’t the only good thing though; there was some great acting in it. I really enjoyed the hell out of Scott’s gay roommate Wallace (Kieran Culkin) who was hilarious as the comic-relief character, and all of the exes each had their own unique personalities with Chris Evans and Jason Schwartzman really shining in their individual roles.

This film had a lot of problems and some are hard to ignore, but Edgar Wright did something unbelievable with this film; he brought a comic-book to life, and it was like watching a video game. The film was so original in so many ways and with the film not making much money at the box office it’s even more reason for me to recommend going out and seeing this one. This film needs to be seen in the theater, you might not love it but I guarantee you’ll be entertained.

  1. I have to say that I disagree with you. I loved this film, and one of the reasons why I loved it so much was because of Scott Pilgrim’s character. Granted, Michael Cera tends to play the same character in each film, I think in this once he stepped out of the box and was able to keep me entertained the entire time.
