The Angry Birds Movie (2016)

Video games today have now moved from home consoles, to phones. And one of the most popular games that people play on their phones is a little game called Angry Birds where one pulls cartoonish birds to attack pigs. So, someone at Hollywood decided to make a movie based on this popular game. And, it’s just as stupid as it sounds. While there are some good things about this, the film definitely caters to a much younger audience, but for adults, the experience will be intolerable. “The Angry Birds Movie” is basically what it promises: a cartoon that is based off of a popular video game that no one is going to take seriously.

The story has an island of birds all living happy and peaceful lives. Except for one named Red (Jason Sudeikis), who basically doesn’t care about his surroundings. He also has anger issues, and is sentenced to attend anger management classes with Chuck (Josh Gad), Bomb (Danny McBride), and Terence (Sean Penn). Red doesn’t care about this, until a group of pigs come from a far away island. Led by Leonard (Bill Hader), the pigs might have a more sinister plot than the birds assume. Only Red and his cynicism must stop the pigs and their evil ways before it’s too late.

“The Angry Birds Movie” is somewhat bad, but most of the time, it is very stupid. The story is very predictable, and the stuff that incorporates the actual game does not occur until the third act. In fact, while most of the story is mainly for kids, there are some adult jokes thrown in that no younger viewer will get. Another problem is that the movie goes at a very quick pace, making it hard to slow down and get acquainted with the film’s surroundings. Then, of course, there are some current pop music which does not fit well into the movie, and it only adds filler to the rest of the feature. And finally, the characters are pretty unlikable, save for Red and Terence, as we know where they are going with them. Overall, “The Angry Birds Movie” is just as stupid and cliched as one might expect.

Now there are some good things that make the movie stand out. For instance, the animation that is given is really good, and while the character designs are not true to the original game, they do look pretty good. What this means is that the designs of the characters maintain that cartoonish style,, while being its own unique identity. On top of this, the backgrounds and the environments do look amazing, as everything looks like a tropical island coming forth to life. The sound design also gets top mention as everything sounds great. And speaking of sound, all of the actors and actresses do deliver good performances and are just having fun with it. Oh, and Peter Dinklage plays an over-the-top eagle, who is by far the funniest thing in the movie.

In conclusion, “The Angry Birds Movie” is definitely not the worst adaptation of a video game, it’s still harmless enough to not make anyone angry over it.
