The Spirit

the-spirit.jpg The spirit is a film adaptation of the Will Eisner DC comic that ran in a 16.pg spread in a tabloid from 1940-1952. Frank Miller who is also responsible for the direction of Sin City and 300 directed this film. This film boasts an all-star cast, starring: Gabriel Macht, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Eva Mendes, Dan Lauria and Sarah Paulson. The Spirit is the story of Denny Colt (Gabirel Macht), who was killed in the line of duty, but mysteriously was resurrected and became the crime-fighting vigilante The Spirit. The antagonist of this film and arch nemesis of The Spirit is The Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson). The Octopus possesses some understanding into the events that made Denny Colt who he is – The Spirit, and Denny is doggedly determined to find out. This is not the only action we see in this film. We get a tease from Eva Mendes in one of her most sumptuous roles yet, as Sand Seref.eva_mendez.jpgSand Seref is a rogue character, that at a young age was Denny’s boyfriend, but later fled the city after a family members death- to pursue a life of unbounded riches- far removed from the crime ridden streets of Central city. This cast dukes it out with a lot of guns and a whole lot of laughs in this comic noir film. The redeeming quality in this movie would have to be the way in which it was filmed- in a grahic noir novel feel with a lot of emphasis on art in the filming. Aside from that I may have to add my bias towards saying that from a guys perspective, Eva Mendes gave you the most bang for your buck in this film. Next prepare for the low down on this film  From the trailers I was expecting a film of greater seriousness hard pressed towards a definite finale. However what we got was something a little more reminiscent of the original Batman and Robin show. The slapstick was predominant and lingered without excitement.
