It’s Kind of a Funny Story (101 min)
“It’s Kind of a Funny Story” is in fact quite the funny story. A depressed boy has a dream where he is attempting to commit suicide. But his attempt fails because his family gets in the way and basically tells him that he is selfish for leaving his family behind like this. So he wakes up and goes to the nearest hospital, where he checks himself into a psycho ward. It doesn’t take him long to realize that compared to all the other insane people in the ward, he is completely normal. This is where the hum or takes over with Zach Galifinalkis leading the way. He plays his role as one of the other residents of the ward, who befriends the boy, and he plays it with a humorous tone yet also a subtle seriousness as well. Our main character, Craig, tries to check out early but can’t for the fact that he must spend a minimum of at least 5 days in the ward so that the doctors can keep after and observe his behavior. The he must take a test, determining if he is sane enough to leave. So he is stuck with all these crazy people who we find to have personalities all of their own. He also meets a girl while in there and they naturally hit it off. What makes this movie transcend from good to great is not only its humor but also its humanity to life. A young boy who thinks that he has it rough gets a rude awakening and realizes that his life is not as bad as it seems and as he discovers that with the help of his many new friends, he also discovers some new joys to fulfill and satisfy his life. The movie becomes a heartwarming tale of self-discovery and of the importance of life and its little treasures. You can count this movie as one of life’s little treasuries as well with the fulfilling message it portrays for us in a masterful sort of masterpiece. “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” is rated PG-13 for mature thematic issues, sexual content, drug material and language.
