“Deadpool & Wolverine” is the 3rd film the “Deadpool” series, the 34th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe & is the first film in the post FOX “X-Men” series. The film sees Ryan Reynolds & Hugh Jackman return to their respective roles as well as a few others from the previous 2 Deadpool films such as Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney & Leslie Uggams. Newcomers include Emma Corrin & Matthew MacFayden. The film is directed by Shawn Levy & co-written by both Levy & Reynolds. This film marks a lot of first Marvel, such as the studios’ first R-rated film & the debut of the Deadpool character in the MCU. The film follows several different events from different films & spinoff series.
After the events of “Deadpool 2”, Wade Wilson (Reynolds) is confronted by the TVA, the Time Variant Agency, after violating the timeline when used Cable’s (Josh Brolin’s character from Deadpool 2) time travel device to save his girlfriend, Vanessa (Baccarin). According to the TVA led by “Mr. Paradox” (MacFayden), Wilson’s “universe” is on the brink of extinction after the death of its “anchor hero”, the Wolverine (Jackman, the ending of Logan). In order to save his universe, Deadpool uses the TVA’s technology to jump through timeline to find a new “Wolverine” to save his universe. After Deadpool finds one, they return to the TVA & discover that Mr. Paradox has a different plan that did not include the TVA which then made Deadpool & Wolverine fugitives and banished to “The Void”, a destroyed universe where lost entities, deserters & other fugitives remain. The Void is run by a dangerous mutant by the name of Cassandra Nova (Corrin) who is the lost twin sister of Professor Charles Xavier who feeds lost souls to the monster known as “Alioath” (the creature from the Loki spinoff series). Now, Deadpool & Wolverine must fend off Nova’s hunting crew & get back to the TVA and stop them from destroying Deadpool’s universe.
Once Fox was purchased by Disney, it was only a matter of time before Deadpool would join the Marvel Cinematic Universe but many fans, including myself, were concerned how would the “R – Rated” Deadpool would be added to Disney’s imagine. I’m happy to announce that it was perfect. This was a fantastic film, from beginning to end & a great way to introduce both Deadpool & Wolverine to the MCU. The idea that Disney was willing to keep Deadpool’s signature dark & crude humor along with the ultra-violent action is commendable and very satisfying. To say Ryan Reynolds was born to play Deadpool is an understatement, he nails this role in both the humor & vulnerability, which was very surprising coming from that character. This was a great way to reintroduce Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Rather than go the traditional route of the same established character just in a new setting, they have Hugh Jackman in a fresh take on a character he’s best known for. The reintroduction of that character was the best way to go for a debut in the MCU. Seeing Jackman finally dawn the iconic yellow suit after nearly 25 years was so satisfying.
Overall, this was a great film that bought our beloved heroes to the right movie studios where they belong. You would think after seeing this movie, how could Fox miss a great opportunity to have Reynolds’ Deadpool & Jackman’s Wolverine in the same movie not work? I mean they had them together in 2009’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” and dropped the ball, big time. Deadpool even makes a jab at Fox in his signature style. I’m pretty sure by now everyone knows about the cameos & surprise appearances, but I won’t spoil anything here but those did play a major part in the movie, much like “Spider Man: No Way Home”. I’m eager to see where both of these characters go from here. This movie definitely put Marvel back on the right track after a slew of disappointing failures both on the big & small screens. The future looks somewhat after the release of the trailer for “Captain America: Brave New World”, the Fantastic Four reveal, the casting of Robert Downey Jr. as “Dr. Doom” & the return of the Russo Brothers to direct the new “Avengers” film.
