The 2005 comedy The 40-Year-Old Virgin stars Steve Carell, Catherine Keener, Paul Rudd, and Seth Rogen. The producers are Judd Apatow, Clayton Townsend, and Shauna Robertson. It is directed by Judd Apatow.
The story centers around a 40-year-old man named Andy who works at an electronics store. One night, while playing poker with his friends Cal, Dave, and Jay, he accidentally gives away that he is a virgin. All three of them vow to get Andy in bed with a woman. Each one of them helps him in their own way. But Andy meets an attractive woman named Trish one day at the store. He eventually gathers the courage to ask her out. As their relationship progresses, Andy is reluctant to take her to bed because he is afraid he wouldn’t be any good.
Once particular aspect of the movie that I find hilarious is the way his friends try to get him ready to have sex for the first time. Jay, for instance, suggests Andy get his chest waxed. This is a very funny scene where Andy screams out in pain and curses the women doing the waxing, only to apologize about two seconds later. Finally he gets up and leaves before he is finished. What we see on his chest is what Cal jokingly calls a “man o’lantern”.
Cal helps Andy by telling him how to speak to women. He says that all he has to do to carry on a conversation with a woman is keep asking questions. Andy tries this with a woman in a bookstore. When she first sees him, she asks him if he is looking for something. He replies by asking her “Should I be looking for something?” The woman suggests a do-it-yourself section to which Andy inquires “Do you like to do it yourself?” She says that sometimes she likes to if the “mood strikes”. He responds by asking her how the mood is striking her right now. She closes by asking Andy not to tell on her and he closes by saying, “unless you want to be told on.”
Dave prepares Andy by giving him his “box of porn.” Andy is reluctant because he says he doesn’t masturbate all that much. Dave replies by saying that he needs to get it out and let it have some air. He says that it may open “Pandora’s box of love.” When Andy tries to give it back to Dave as he leaves, Dave says loud enough for the whole neighborhood to hear, “For the last time Andy, I don’t want your giant box of pornography!”
To wrap, I think that The 40-Year-Old Virgin makes you laugh hysterically. Its sexually based humor is present in a way that is funny and not too disgusting.
