“The Mandalorian & Gorgu” was co written and directed by Jon Favreau and based on the “Star Wars” spin off series and is the 12th film in the “Star Wars” franchise. Favreau & Dave Feloni both wrote this film as well “The Mandalorian” series. The film sees Pedro Pascal returns as the titular character and is joined by Jeremey Allen White, Martin Scorsese, Jonny Coyne & Sigourney Weaver. This story was originally supposed to be the 4th season of “The Mandalorian” but due to the Hollywood labor disputes in 2023, LucasFilm & Disney reevaluated the concept of the series and case to go in a feature film way and was announced in & began filming in late 2024.
Following the events of “The Return of the Jedi” and the previous “Mandalorian” 3 seasons, Din Djarin, better known as “The Mandalorian” (Pascal) and his ward, Gorgu, serves as a bounty hunter for the New Republic under commander Ward (Weaver). The next bounty comes in the form of a former Galactic commender who has been in hiding since the fall of the Empire. The only people who know the whereabouts of this commander are The Hutts twins, who are siblings & descendants of the famous crime lord, Jabba. Once in front of The Hutts, Din is given an ultimatum in exchange for the whereabouts. The Hutts agree to help Din in exchange to bring back their nephew, Rotta (White) who has been kidnapped by a group of mercenaries. Din agrees but quickly realizes that Rotta was not kidnapped but ran away from a life of crime & also learn that the Hutts also hired the Galactic commander & his crew to take out Din & Gorgu once they found Rotta. Now, Din, Gorgu & Rotta join together to fend off waves of bounty hunters & former Galactic soldiers to save themselves from certain death.
I’ve always enjoyed The Mandalorian series and really believe that it has been the best Star Wars content that LucasFilm has released since being bought by Disney in 2012 outside of “The Force Awakens” and few other spinoff series. The idea of taking the 4th season & putting on the big screen is a bit of a gamble that unfortunately doesn’t pay off here. The film does have the action & adventure made for the big screen but the where film falls apart is the story line. The plot feels as if the series took all the episodes and pack them into a TV movie. It has the look and feel of a Star Wars movie but the plot of spinoff series and that’s kind of the problem. Pedro Pascal has always been great as The Mandalorian but they should’ve expanded the story to feel more like the movie “The Rundown” with a Star Wars backdrop. It could’ve worked if certain things were changed and expanded upon the movie could’ve worked but it didn’t. I’m not saying it’s bad movie by any means, I just think it way better than “Solo”, “Attack of the Clones”, “The Last Jedi” & “The Rise of Skywalker”. It’s not top tier but not bottom of the barrel either. It’s the middle of row as far as Star Wars films.
Despite the movie’s flaw it still manage to have decent run at the box office. As of right now, the film has grossed over $315 million worldwide against a $165 million budget making it the lowest grossing film in the franchise since 2018’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story”. Thats probably not the numbers Disney & LucasFilm were hoping for but it still in the top 10 highest grossing movies of the year so far. No future plans have been announced for another film or Season 5 in the series as of yet but when it comes to Star Wars there will always a glimmer of “hope”.
