Hot Rod

Starring: Andy Samberg, Ian McShane, Jorma Taccone, Sissy Spacek

Ok, this movie was hilarious!  I laughed my ‘you know what’ off this whole movie!  I was really surprised when I first saw the previews for this movie coming out, because it looked like it’d be funny….and it was!  Personally, I haven’t really cared for Samberg on Saturday Night Live, so I am a complete convert with this movie.  I used to feel the same way about Will Ferrell, and Adam Sandler, as well.  These are all comedians that I just don’t think shine all that well on a TV spot.  However, you put them on the big screen, and hold onto your gut, because you’ll mess your pants when Samberg hits his father just the right way!  Being in Arizona, one of the best scenes was when he asked his love interest who would win between a grilled cheese vs. a taco, and about three quarters of the theatre I was in was hispanic, and they all got real quiet, like they were trying to figure out if that was a racist joke or not.  As if to answer them, Samberg’s character quickly chides his love interest’s answer by telling her that it sounded kind of racist (though the question itself was too) and suddenly the rest of the theatre that had been silent while my friend and I laughed loudly, joined us in our laughter!  I got to say, this movie is not for kids, really, but it’s his ability to act like an adult stuck in his childhood that makes this movie work.  You really start to believe that Samberg IS this guy!  I give this one 4 out of 5 stars.
