Movie and Film Reviews (MFR) Comedy Life of Brian (1979)

Life of Brian (1979)

The comedy group Monty Python consisted of five British men and one American, and together they changed sketch comedy. Their writing was unique and brilliant as sketch comedy had not experience something like this before. So when the group went into the movie business, everything was heavily improved. Yes, “Holy Grail” is considered a masterpiece as well as a comedy classic, but 1979’s “Life of Brian” can be argued as the group’s best work. However, the subject matter of parodying the life of Jesus Christ can offend some people, but for the most part, it works. “Life of Brian” is a great comedy that may not be for everyone.

The story parallels the story of Jesus Christ by having a man named Brian lead the way to a revolution against the Romans… Yeah, you can see why so many people got offended at this movie.

“Life of Brian” is a simple parody of how different one could imagine what really happened during the times of Jesus. The writing is great as the Monty Python team worked together and knew what they were getting themselves into. It’s not necessarily blasting the religious culture, just poking fun at what happened and all these beliefs that were happening during that time. The comedy in this film works to perfection as the timing of the jokes and situations happen and are implemented greatly. As for the production itself, the design is great and sets the tone for the movie. The music is a good combination with the pacing of the film, with the song ‘Always Look On the Bright Side of Life’ being memorable and catchy. Yet what surprises most viewers is how the movie actually got made and turned into this big success; it certainly paid off.

Despite all the praise given to this movie, there are some problems. For one thing, some of the jokes do not work; they can be either hit or miss. Speaking of the humor, it can mostly be shocking at certain moments, especially during the end of the film. This can lead to some people, mainly in the religious atmosphere, to get offended with its subject material, despite the movie being almost 35 years old.

In conclusion, “Life of Brian” is a great comedy that showed that the Monty Python team can go to places where it can go into a great debate. And it’s proven here. With this film, everything about it can work if you’re in the right mindset.
