The Roommate (2011)

The Roommate was directed by Christain Christansen and stars Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly. This drama/thriller was set during Freshman year at a Los Angeles college. This 91 minute long movie is a fast past movie.

Sara (Minka Kelly) is a fashion design student who moves to Los Angeles to attend college. She is your typical college girl. She has to balance school, work, friends, and her new boyfriend. She seems to have it all under control, until she realizes that her roommate has some issues and wants to be more than just friends.  Sara starts out thinking her roommate, Rebecca (Leighton Meester) is a nice girl and they start sharing clothes and hanging out together, until Sara finally sees that Rebecca is obsessed with her. She acts like her mother and hates it when Sara stays out late without calling. Soon, bad things start happening to anyone who is close to Sara. Now if Sara wants to have a normal college experience, she needs to find out the truth about her roommate and put a stop to her.

I love that this is a PG-13 horror film. Finally a horror film without the blood and gore. With Rebecca hurting everyone who gets close to Sara, you know what’s going to happen to whom and when, you just don’t see what happens. It is left up to your imagination to fill in the blanks. More often than not, your imagination is much more creative than what can be captured on screen. The director did a fantastic job with this movie.

With college films, we always see the “good life”. You know, the friends and partying. The darkness in this film finally gives the impression that not everyone has a good college experience; at least not their first year. The music goes along with the darkness perfectly.

Overall I would have to say this movie was well done. The cast knows how to act, and as said before, the 90 minutes will fly by. If you are looking for an easy scare with no blood and gore, then this movie is for you.
