“Red” (2010)

Red based on the popular DC comic , is an eccentric over the top masculine fun thrill ride. But the humor and jokes sometimes fail , and therefore take away from a very intrigued audience member like myself , but no matter Red is one of these films that actually succeed in pulling off actually decent action sequences including a brief confrontation , and a satisfying throw down with Karl Urban & Bruce Willis which was pretty cool considering the huge AGE difference between the two. Its always nice to watch the old people accomplish what they are trying to. Also Helen Mirren who is also a real badass in this movie along with John Malkovich. The script filled with the outstanding dialog and witty charm and humor , can make up for most of the movies implausible flaws , but if you really can go along with the movie , and forget for once second that this probably would never happen. Then you should find enjoyment in this film. But one person i feel was under casted is the lead female interest which is (Mary Louis Parker) which is sad considering i love her show “Weeds”. Morgan Freemen feels like hes also getting a much needed break also , by doing this movie , hes really showing off what he can do. Karl Urban also deals a significant amount of flare to the film.

Red stands for Retired Extremely Dangerous , which is what retiree Frank Morris has been tagged as , and now lives a boring day to day live , which in the first 10mins you can tell hes life is hell. But when a wet team shows up in his house in the middle of the night , hes forced to get back into the game , and soon realizes he has been put on a hit – list by the CIA and now must kidnapp hes lady friend (Parker) and search and find the other people on the hit list. Which thus leads him to get back his old gang which include Joe (Freemen) who is also living a day to day live in an old folks retirement home. He is also on the hit-list , Now Frank needs to track down , his old pal , Marvin (Malkovich) who lives deep undercover , considering he is suppose to be dead in a fire. The team quickly discovered why they are being hunted to cover up a conspiracy by the government. They also enlist the help of a former friend (Helen Mirren) who is also retired , and is still kicking ass and taking names.

Red has many flaws the main problem is the completely deliberate and unsatisfying ending. You would think with the films , build up or what not , the ending would have been a bit more …. i don’t know action?. But considering the films budget , its still a romp , that you may or may not be talking about for a week or two. The film probably after its first run , will die down quickly the film has a very quiet word of mouth , its more under the radar then anything. This will probably attract the more older adult crowd as oppose to my demographic the teens. I found sometimes the humor to be a bit to much for this genre of a movie. I mean do not get me wrong , i love an action film with humor last summers A-Team. But the film i feel , was relying on that humor to keep its energy going up and alive. But like i said most of the cast makes up for it , with good supporting work , the screenplay could have been a little more thought out more than anything , some of the plot development and settings were a little well ? eerie.

Overall: Nonetheless , i’m giving the film a mild recommendation mainly for the films efforts to try and keep an audience entertained and sometimes if the case it does , not it still does not give up without a fight. Then when you least expect it , the film could surprise you , the actors are mainly better then the material , because this is basically your typical action film , it has the good – guy & Bad guy premise , that we have all seen before. The film , also slicks and moves at a pace of an action film should. This could be a good thing or a bad thing but really you never no , but there were some leads undercasted such as MaryLouise Parker and @ some mild points the movie sort of lost my interest which is something you do not want to happen when the movie is barley keeping your attention as is. But like i said overall the film is receiving a mild recommendation , what i’m saying its not really worth seeing in the theaters it is more of a rental worthy kind of flick when your home or bored , its more a breath of fresh air more than anything.
