In ‘We Need To Talk About Kevin’, the character of Kevin does something bad
It changes his life and his family’s life and makes his mother very, very sad
The events of the story are told through flashbacks and are pieced together bit by bit
It’s a technique that is frustrating to watch at times and might make you want to quit
Kevin is an odd little kid and acts very strange from the time when he’s a little boy
As a teen, when things go bad, it can be linked back to something he got as a toy
He seems to really dislike his mother and he seemingly torments her just for fun
However, when his dad is around he acts fine and appears to be a pretty good son
In the present day the mom is alone and treated roughly by people in town
She remembers through those flashbacks how her life gets turned upside down
Tilda Swinton is excellent as the mom and portrays her in a way that only she could
John C. Reilly plays the dad and Ezra Miller plays the teenage Kevin and both are good
The subjects of parenting, grief and responsibility are covered in a very tough way
It’s an intense film and, if you can handle the rough themes, it’s worth a look I say
