Frozen (2013)

Disney has been trying to make this movie for quite some time now, and they have finally gotten their chance. With “Frozen” we get a unique spin on the tale of ‘The Snow Queen’ and the results are pretty good. Now there some problems with the movie, but for part, it’s still quite good. “Frozen” tends to tread some dark territory, but by the end, it will warm your heart.

The story has two sisters named Anna and Elsa living the kingdom of Arendelle, where things are nice and dandy. The only problem is that Elsa has magical powers that create ice and can harm those around her. She eventually escapes the kingdom and turns the land into an eternal winter. Anna tries to save her sister from this curse, but she meets up with a ice packer named Kristoff who joins her along with trying to help her sister from being shunned from society. Can Anna truly save her sister from a world of being alone, and warm her heart back to the way it was?

“Frozen” is definitely a technical achievement from Disney. The animation is outstanding and the designs for the characters really shine through. The story takes a unique spin on ‘The Snow Queen’ that, while not sticking truly to the source material, is not bad as it does bring back memories of past Disney movies where the focus was on a well-known fairy tale. There are even some twists at the end of the movie that one has to see to believe. The cast did a pretty good job with their roles as the characters do poke fun as some traditional fairy tale cliches like meeting a man on the first date and instantly wanting to marry right then. The editing flows at a smooth and nice pace, the direction does a fine job, the entire film is entertaining nonetheless.

However, there are some problems with the film. The first couple of minutes are a bit rushed and to the point. The songs are not likeable and are not really that memorable as say “The Little Mermaid” did. The tone in the movie could have been a little darker; there are some dark elements to the film, but it could have had a bit more.

In conclusion, “Frozen” may not be one of Disney’s best animated features, but it is still good and it will keep your interest until until the very end. Plus the short that proceeded it is a great tribute to all things Mickey Mouse.
