Movie and Film Reviews (MFR) Sci-Fi Flash Gordon (1980)

Flash Gordon (1980)

Flash Gordon, a quarterback for the New York Jets, is forced into the rocketship of Dr. Zarkhov, together with the beautiful young lady he had crash landed with, Dale Arden. The three accidentally launch into space, pass through a worm hole, and wake in the planet Mongo. They are taken as prisoners and brought before Ming the Merciless, a tyrannical emperor who sees Earth as a threat to his throne, and plans to destroy the Earthling planet. It is up to Flash to save the whole of humankind before it s too late.

A sci-fi epic space adventure based on the comic strip created by Alex Raymond. The film is directed by Mike Hodges and is an instant cult classic with the audience. Also notable is the musical score and soundtrack produced and composed by Queen.

Not bad at all if I must say. I was surprised by this film. Actually thought it was going to be another failed feature. Guess I was wrong. This film is brilliantly corny, and I say that as a compliment. Its so corny, its entertaining and fun. A complete entertainment package is this film. It has humor, action, romance, and drama, all rolled into the crazy story line. The sets and costumes in this are great. I saw a bit of the psychedelic feel and flavor right there. Amazing how these early 80’s sci-fi’s try to make everything look so convincing. The soundtrack is awesome as well, and all originally composed and produced by the legendary band Queen. Yeah!

Very likable and well worth the view.
