Reign Over Me

Starring: Adam Sandler, Don Cheadle, Jada Pinkett Smith, Liv Tyler

Again, this is yet another movie where Adam Sandler tries to play a serious role, with a funny side woven in, and it just doesn’t quite work.  I have to say, that I am partial to Sandler’s movies, I love him, and for that reason I liked the movie a bit.  However, it wasn’t one of his best.  It was a bit touching at times, and also a bit too stupid at others.  Don Cheadle really helped add some gravitoss to the movie…damn that guy is good!
However, it wasn’t enough to save it.  This was a good example of how you can put big money actors into all the roles, even small ones, and make the movie work ‘just’ because of the caliber of acting in it.  I forget who said it, that there are no small roles, only small actors… well.. this movie proves the person right.  This movie would’ve been a bomb, but the other actors involved pulled it into something that somewhat worked.  I don’t think it’s Sandler’s worst movie yet, ‘Spanglish‘ still holds the top spot on that one, with ‘Punch Drunk Love‘ a close second, however this one wasn’t too far behind them.  I give it two stars out of five, but I sooooo wanted to give it three, Adam, I promise!

  1. Hmm… afraid I’m going to have to disagree with your review. I found the film compelling and original. I love how it tried to make its main focus on the bond and friendship of Sandler and Cheadle. It worked for me.
