When five strangers, who have all commited some kind of crime, enter an elevator, they have no idea that they are together for a reason. Devil is a horror/mystery that stars Chris Messina, Logan Marshall-Green, Jenny O’Hara, Bojana Novakovic, Bokeem Woodbine and Geoffrey Arend. The movie takes place in today Philadelphia at an office building. And unfortunatly where the devil is waiting.
“When I was a child, my mother would tell me a story about how the Devil roams the Earth, Sometimes, she said, he would take human form so he could punish the damned on Earth before claiming their souls. The ones he chose would be gathered together and tortured as he hid amongst them, pretending to be one of them. I always believed my mother was telling an old wives’ tale.” This is the first line of the movie which is narrated by Ramirez (Jacob Vargas) who is a security gaurd at the building. After a suicide has occured at the building, Detective Bowden (Chris Messina) is there to investigate it. The person had jumped out of the building and landed on a truck. The person was holding a rosary and had left a note saying something about the devil. Inside the building are five strangers who all get on the same elevator. Ben Larson (Bokeem Woodbine) is a security guard with a violent past, Vince McCormick (Geoffrey Arend) is a mattress salesman and con artist, Tony (Logan Marshall-Green) was a mechanic who was in the U.S. military and is trying to get a job at the building, Sarah Caraway (Bojana Novakovic) is a greedy heiress who is meeting with her lawyer and an elderly woman (Jenny O’Hara) who is a compulsive theif. Each one of these people have some kind of criminal record and little do they know they have all been brought together for a reason. Once they have pushed the buttons for their floors the elevator starts going up while it plays “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree”. Then, all the sudden it comes to a hault at the 23rd floor. Some panic while others complain or remain silent. One of the security guards realizes that the sixth elevator saids it’s being repaired but when he asks the repairman if he is working on it he saids he’s not. They tell the five passengers to remain calm and that they are fixing the problem and that they have to turn the lights out. When they come back on Sarah saids she has been bit on the back and when she starts bleeding she lifts up her shirt to find that something had happened while the lights were out. Now there is tension between the strangers as they are trying to figure out which one of them would do something like that. But as time goes by and everytime the lights go out they here noises and when the lights comes back on another passenger is dead. Detective Bowden is trying to keep everyone calm but he cannot stop the Devil from attacking. While all this is taking place Ramirez tells Bowden that it is the Devil and that everyone in the elevator and even them, are there for a reason. Detective Bowden tries to figure out who is the criminal but with each having a criminal record and with a passenger dying everytime the lights go out he can’t help but consider that it just might be the Devil’s work.
The acting was great in this movie. The characters were very convincing and believable. Because each character was much diffrent from the next and since each had a criminal background, you could never really tell who the murderer was even though you thought you knew. I think it was probably suprising for many after finding out who the Devil was using as a disguise. And since all of the characters were strangers to eachother and you didn’t know much about them , they were all mysterious and it made you really think about who the killer actually was.
I was very unsure about this movie because I knew that most of the film was going to take place in an elevator, I figured that it wasn’t going to be that good because I didn’t think that much could happen in such a small space. But at the same time I knew that it was written by M. Night Shyamalan who has written some really great movies, so I was curious. And after watching it I was really amazed. The movie was eighty minutes long and during that time the movie kept me intrested the whole way. I never imagined a movie could be so good with most of the action happening from the inside of an elevator.
This movie was so good based on the fact that it mostly took place in an elevator. It kept me intrested from begining to end. Sometimes you were sure it was one person but then if they died you were shocked and weren’t sure who the Devil really was. And there is a twist at the end that I never saw coming and really shocked me. I think this movie was good and is worth watching.
