Movie and Film Reviews (MFR) Comedy Wedding Crashers: An Oscar Review

Wedding Crashers: An Oscar Review

Wedding Crashers is a 2005 comedy starring Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn. This movie might be credited with riding the “bromance” wave before it became mainstream (That may sound like a hipster phrase but I hope you’ll forgive me). I would like to say before I continue that this is not the first time I’ve seen this movie, most of the movies I review (this includes Big Fish) are from myDVD/Blu Ray collection that I’ve just decided to review. It is partly because of convenience but also because I don’t exactly have the money to just buy new movies or get a Netflix account. With that in mind I would like to add the disclaimer that this is probably my 25th viewing of wedding crashers, and I barely bought it this year. Even so the movie holds up really well, even when expected most of the jokes continue to hit hard which is a true testament to the film’s staying power.Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn play two guys who crash wedding after wedding to sleep with lonely girls who are thrilled by the idea of love at a wedding. When they decide to crash a big time wedding (It’s the Secretary of Treasury’s daughter’s wedding) Owen Wilson has a change of heart and wonders if he’s getting too old to be sleeping around. The premise is a little ridiculous but this movie isn’t exactly something you need to take too seriously. Which isn’t to say that it’s mindless entertainment. True the movie shifts into cruise control by overly relying on Wilson and Vaughn’s chemistry and improv but since they chose to go that route it’s great that they got two amazing actors to play the parts. Wilson and Vaughn are perfect in their roles and Vaughn especially delivers laughs every time he’s on screen. The rest of the supporting cast (Rachel McAdams, Isla Fisher, Christopher Walken!, and even Bradley Cooper) are all amazing as well. The movie can get a little impossible at times, when you wonder how these guys haven’t been caught yet or how a psychopath like Bradley Cooper is allowed anywhere near civilized society, but overall it works.  It is a raunchy sex fest 90% of the movie but as the movie progresses it finds a level of honesty and sweetness, not just in the romance that blossoms between Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams but in the much more interesting relationship between Wilson and Vaughn. Two best friends separated by a “betrayal” and coming back in forgiveness towards the end. It’s a great story that really just leaves you satisfied after watching it, not to mention laughing your ass off.Overall I wouldn’t exactly say that this is one of the greatest movies ever made but it’s not trying to be. It’s trying to be a funny movie and it succeeds on every level. Towards the third act the movie starts to slow down and you start to think that it’s losing it’s way but then Will Ferrel shows up and hilariously kick starts the movie back into gear. Wedding Crashers is a great way to spend your time, and if it feels like I’m just being too nice to movies get used to it because for the most part I don’t buy movies I don’t like. Maybe when I have to watch a movie that my friend’s suggest I’ll be a little less easy on the movies. I give Wedding Crashers 4 Oscars.
