Young Frankenstein

The hilarious comedy Young Frankenstein is a great film directed by Mell Brooks. The main character, Dr. Frankenstein (which he pronounces Frahnkensteen), is played by an amazing actor who really knows how to get into the skin of his characters. He has a humble but greedy servant Igor and a lovely lab assistant named Inga. He has a chaste fiancé named Elizabeth who doesn’t even want to touch him. The movie takes place somewhere in Germany.

A professor who is unfortunately related to Dr. Frankenstein finds out that he inherited the tower of his Grandfather. He thinks that his grandfather was nothing more than a lunatic and that the experiments he did were all unscientific. He didn’t like it when someone pronounced his name normally; he would say it is pronounced Frahnkensteen. He got a servant which he had to pay for because he was a bit greedy. He has a lovely assistant who tries to help him in doing jobs but just helps him in doing it. He finds his grandfathers secret books and learns that somehow his experiments are possible. He gets dead parts and tries to make a living dead. The monster can’t talk but has a lot of emotion. No one except the doctor, his servant and his assistant like the monster. Dr. Frankenstein tries to help him but fails at doing so and lets him loose in the city.

The acting in this movie was very good especially for the characters they played. Each of the actors played his or her role really well and there couldn’t have been a better replacement for them in this movie. The head police officer played his role well with his broken hand and how he controlled his movement. The scene where they shot the darts was well played by him. Others such as the old maid were irreplaceable because of the way they looked and the way they acted.

The special effects on the other hand were a bit poor. When Dr. Frankenstein stabbed himself in the leg you could see the foam underneath it clearly. The violin playing was bad because the actress didn’t change her finger position while the music changed. The lightning was displayed pretty badly in some parts of the movie. In some places the black and white made it hard to see what is going on for example in the cave when Elizabeth, Dr. Frankenstein’s fiancé, and the monster are together.

Overall the film was a good to watch film. The film is a must watch if you have some guests over and want to have a bit of a laugh. This movie won’t be great if there are children around because it includes quite a bit of crude humour. Other than that it would be a great movie to watch and definitely worth a try if you haven’t seen it yet.

  1. One of the funniest comedies ever made by the great Mel Brooks. This is one movie I never get tired of; love the characters, love the dialogue and the jokes are laugh-out-loud funny.
