Cyrus (2010)

Cyrus 2010font face=”Verdana, sans-serif” size=”3″>Cyrus is a comedy-drama written by the Duplass brothers. It stars Jonah Hill, John C. Reilly, and Marisa Tomei. This was one of Jonah’s first serious parts and he stepped up to the plate. The cast did a good job of combining comedy and drama, keeping it just light enough to laugh but also adding enough drama and feeling to evoke emotion in the viewer.Cyrus (Jonah Hill) is a 21 year old aspiring musician who still lives with his mother (Marisa Tomei). John (John C. Reilly) meets Molly at a party that his ex-wife made him attend with her and her future husband. John and Molly quickly begin to develop a relationship and it seems a bit awkward for Molly’s son(Hill), when John starts sleeping over at Mollys house only a few days after they meet. Cyrus and Molly’s relationship is alot closer than the average mother and son, this is shown when cyrus walks into the bathroom when his mother is in the shower. Molly exits the shower first which leads the audience to believe that she stepped out naked in front of her son. One night when Molly and John are making out in her bed, Cyrus lets out a blood curdling scream and Molly runs to his room. He is having one of his panic attacks and needs his mother to console him. After his mother goes to sleep Cyrus asks to talk with John and he informs him that his mother thinks John is coming on too strong. Cyrus eventually moves out of the house and it really hurts his mother, she thinks its too soon but this leads to John moving in. The two of them seem to be happy and doing well, that is, until Cyrus decides he wants to move back home. The movie is somewhat dry in terms of action and climax until it comes to the end, but the actors do a good job of displaying emotion and conveying their thoughts without saying many words or acting out in unrealistic ways. Jonah Hill can be seen staring at John from time to time throughout the movie and his feelings aren’t truly expressed until close to the end of the movie so it allows the viewer to develop their own opinion of what’s in his mind. Like when Cyrus barges in on John in the bathroom at the wedding, he just stands there staring at him for a period of time and it makes the viewer wonder what he’s thinking and what he’s about to say.The movie relies heavily on interpretation and conversation, but it leads up to what I felt was a deserving climax at the end.The directors (the Duplass brothers) did a pretty good job getting the feel of the film across, the soundtrack did some of the work as well. The music was provided by Michael Andrews who has scored movies such as Donni Darko and Walk Hard : The Dewey Cox Story which is another Reilly project. It helps to give the movie a light hearted feeling in even the most dramatic situtaions. The music includes songs from Miss TK &The Revenge, Empire of the Sun, Fol Chen and others combine to give Cyrus an indie California vibe.Cyrus is a movie for different cinema lovers. If you are watching expecting to see the Jonah Hill from Superbad or Get Him to the Greek or the John C. Reilly from Step Brothers you will be sadly disappointed. It is a mature film in the sense of the points and the comedy, there are no simple jokes being made. The viewer must understand the characters in the film in order to fully comprehend what they are saying and to get the full effect of the film.
