Top Comic Book Based Films of 2011, a Mr. E Movie Calendering Preview…
“Attention, all comic book nerds, can I have your attention. It’s time to unite in joy… our time is finally here!”
Yep, boys and girls I’ve declared it our year. 2011 is here with a bang, a boom, and a pow! We’ve already seen a pretty good re-release of the 1930-40’s radio show that Bruce Lee made famous in the 1960’s in The Green Hornet. But, that’s just the tip of this epic iceberg!
(In order based on release date.)
The Green Hornet – Released on Jan. 14 – Director: Michel Gondry -Stars: Seth Rogen, Jay Chou, Christopher Waltz
A radio drama in the 1930s that became a comic book series in the ’40s and TV series in the ’60s about a vigilante newspaper baron and his sidekick Kato. FYI, Kato steals this one the second he hits the screen! I recommend you check this one out if you haven’t already. Don’t worry you don’t need to know anything about the jade defender to get a kick out of this one. So see it in 3D if you get the chance.
Thor – Release Date: May 6 – Director: Kenneth Branagh – Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman
The character based on Norse mythology first appeared in a 1962 Stan Lee Marvel comic Journey Into Mystery and was part of The Avengers. This big screen adaptation of the iconic character sees Thor start a war just before becoming exiled from Asgard to Earth. Not a very likeable character lets see how they make this work. Also, costumes look a bit Clash of the Titans to me. Maybe they were going for that?
Priest – Release Date: May 13 – Director: Scott Charles Stewart – Stars: Cory Goodman, Min-Woo Hyung
A graphic novel series about a a warrior priest who hunts down vampires during a holy war. Trailers look great and the comic was cool. Lets hope it all translates well.
X-Men First Class – Release Date: June 3 -Director: Matthew Vaughn – Stars: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence
Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created the team of mutant superheroes in 1963. As with the trend this ones a prequel. This film looks back at young Xavier and Magneto before their feud between each other began the epic series. Should be a great look at the origin of these cult icons.
Green Lantern – Release Date: June 17 – Director: Martin Campbell – Stars: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard
The first Green Lantern appeared in DC Comics in 1940 as the possessor of a powerful ring used to keep the universe safe. With such a beloved and long running series they’re really going to have to go above and beyond to keep the fan boys from burning this mother down if they let this one go south. Initial photo and reports look excellent! So, lets maintain a “wait and see” attitude before we go all pyro.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon – Release Date: July 22 – Director: Michael Bay – Stars: Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Tyrese Gibson
OK, with doubt in our hearts we await the next installment of this visually appealing, yet dramatically squealing series based on the beloved Hasbro toy that a lot of us grew up on. We close our eyes, with fingers crossed, chanting under our breathe, “Come on Bay, let’s do this!”
Captain America – Release Date: July 22 – Director: Joe Johnston – Stars: Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Samuel L. Jackson
A Marvel Comics creation from 1941, Captain America is the story about a sickly young man injected with an experimental serum to help the U.S.A. during World War II.
Cowboys and Aliens – Release Date: July 29 – Director: Jon Favreau – Stars: Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde
This 2006 graphic novel imagines an alien invasion in the mid-1800s Wild West gets it”s big screen debut and I can’t wait! I mean it’s COWBOYS and it’s ALIENS together in one movie! Come on unique factor alone shoots this one to the top of the “Must-Watch” list!
Conan the Barbarian – Release Date: Aug. 19 – Director: Marcus Nispel – Stars: Jason Momoa, Ron Perlman, Rose McGowan
The 1930s comic books that became a launching pad for the “Governator’s” career has been rebooted! I doubt it could ever match up to the original but lets not pre-judge this one just yet.And now, just because I know these ones are coming in 2012, a sneak peak at…
The Amazing Spiderman – Release Date: July 3, 2012- Director: Marc Webb – Stars: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, and Rhys Ifans
This one is set to be a complete reboot of the Spiderman series focusing on his high school years. Not much is known about the script details but stay tuned.
Batman: The Dark Knight Rises- Release Date: July 20 – Director: Christopher Nolan – Stars: Christian Bale, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Gary Oldman
This one will conclude the Bale/Nolan trilogy. Status of the production is it’s in pre-production. Other cast members officially signed on include Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle aka Catwoman and Tom Hardy will play Bane, considered one of Batman’s most deadly, powerful foes. While Morgan Freeman and Michael Cane will reprise their roles as Lucius Fox and Alfred.
Deadpool – Release Date: TBA, 2012 – Director: Adam Berg – Stars: Ryan Reynolds
Script is still in development. Based on Wade Wilson a mercenary who gets cancer and undergoes an experimental procedure that is an attempt to duplicate Wolverine’s surgery but with mixed results. He can heal like Wolverine but he develops multiple personalities and goes by the name, “The Merc with a Mouth.” Lets hope they don’t screw this one up!
