The Crazies (2010)

The Crazies is a 2010 Sci-Fi/Horror film directed by Bret Eisner. It was written by Scott Kosar and Ray Wright. This film is a remake of the 1973 film “The Crazies” by George Romero who is also the executive producer and co-writer of the remake. It features Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell, Joe Anderson and Danielle Panabaker.

This film is based on the small town of Ogden Marsh, Iowa. The town’s sheriff (Olyphant) and his wife, the town doctor (Mitchell) begin to notice some town residents exhibiting bizarre, and eventually murderous behavior. While investigating a pilot’s dead body in the swamp, the sheriff and deputy (Anderson) discover a large cargo plane completely submerged underwater. Communication services are then lost, and soldiers arrive to take all residents to quarantine at the local high school. Everyone is examined for symptoms of infection and the ones that seem effected are then separated and gurneyed. It is later known that the “infection” has something to do with the crash of the cargo plane and people are being infected through the drinking water. The Sheriff and his wife, along with a few “survivors” try to stay alive and get away from the town.

Now,contrary to popular belief, this is NOT a zombie movie. The “infected” are not zombies, but people infected with a disease due to them drinking then water. This is one of the very, very, very few remakes that is actually BETTER than the original. The acting is actually very effective and the make-up special effects are quite good. This is film is a perfect example that not every  horror film has to be immensely gory and cheesy to be a GOOD horror film. It’s the actual “realness” of the film that I think really scares people. And although we have seen this premise many times before, this film surpasses all of them with its sincerity and solidity.
