Slumber Party Massacre 2 is a 1987 horror movie distributed by New Concord. It stars Crystal Bernard, Kimberly McArthur, Juliette Cummins, Patrick Lowe, and Heidi Kozak. The music is by Richard Cox and the director is Deborah Brock.
This story takes place several years after the events of Slumber Party Massacre. The younger sister of Valerie Bates, who killed Russ Thorn the original killer, is now 17 years old. She still suffers from nightmares about the Big Bloody Incident, while Valerie is in a mental institution. Courtney is a member of an all-girl rock group and is going with them to a condo to have fun and practice for the weekend. In her dreams, Courtney is warned by her older sister not to “go all the way”. Also in the dream is a mysterious man dressed all in black leather and wielding a guitar with a weapon on the end of it very similar to Russ Thorn’s. Her dreams begin to slip into real life as the “driller killer” one-by-one kills off her friends.
This film has many references to horror movie icons of previous slasher films. They seem so obvious that it’s ridiculous. Courtney, for example, has the last name Bates. For you slasher fans out there, you’ll know that legendary cinema killer Norman Bates, of Psycho fame, shares a clear similarity with young Courtney.
Also, you may notice the last names of the police officers who appear in the movie. One is named Officer Kreuger, most likely to honor Freddy Krueger, the killer in the Nightmare on Elm Street series. His partner is Officer Voohiees, in reference to Jason Voorhees, the well-known hockey mask killer from the Friday the 13th series. Now, it is widely known that this film’s predecessor, Slumber Party Massacre, was intended to be a parody of the slasher movie genre as a whole. But its sequel, Slumber Party Massacre 2, also seems to be a parody, this time of the notorious horror serial killers themselves.
As before, the “driller killer” is a man without a past. But, there is a significant difference this time. This killer appears to be supernatural, unlike Russ Thorn, who was very human. He is able to appear wherever he wants and starts out in dreams. His weapon of choice is a guitar with a drill on the end of it. It is not clear what brought him into the real world. But a clue indicates that the famous “sin factor”, synonymous with slasher movies, triggers his appearance. Early in the film, Valerie warns Courtney not to “go all the way” with her boyfriend. When she does, that’s when the killer comes into the real world.
To wrap, if you’re into slasher movies that are obviously cheaply made but remarkably entertaining, then I highly recommend Slumber Party Massacre 2!
