Slugs: The Movie (1987)

Only Spanish director Juan Piquer Simon (Pieces – 1982) could of gotten one of the slowest creatures on earth and made them one of the most dangerous beings around terrorizing people in a rural community with his horror movie Slugs. Starring Michael Garfield, Kim Terry, Phillip Machale, Alicia Moro, Santago Alvarez and Concha Cuetos.?A bunch of teens scare an old man off the road when he is walking, and gets pissed for a bit but when he gets home his dog gives him warning signs but is too drunk to realize it. He takes a nap when the slugs get him. County health inspector Mike Brady (Michael Garfield) and Sheriff Reese (John Battaglia) are driving to the drunk man’s house to evict him but only instead they find his corpse picked clean. Mike does an investigation of the house but only finds slime trails leading to the basement. Mike and his best friend county sewer engineer Don Palmer (Phillip Machale), investigate a claim by a woman who says her sewer smells bad, Don goes down into the sewer to clear the clog (where he discovers human skin and a huge cow tongue), but when something pulls his clearing bar deeper into the pipe Don makes a retreat. At the local restaurant one of the female teens blames “The Goat Killer” ( the town’s mythical serial killer) for the death of the drunk but nobody pays attention. A Greenhouse owner and his wife die because a slug crawled into his clove and blew up the house (not before he chopped off his hand), now the slugs are all killing all over the town.

Slugs has your standard B movie acting, I really don’t think that it wouldn’t make a more fun of a film if it didn’t have kind of quality to it. Michael Garfield does great as Mike even towards the end it feels like he gets even better. I got to give Frank Brana (who plays the Water Dept. head, Frank Phillips) some props for his acting, one of my favorite lines he says is, “You ain’t got the authority to declare happy birthday!”. I thought Juan Piquer Simon’s direction in this film is very good with all the angles and not pulling back on the gore department. The screenplay written by Ron Gantman (based on the book by Shaun Hutson) is kind of confusing so try your best not to focus on what is happening and you will still have fun with the movie.

Slugs (The Movie was added because so people wouldn’t get confused with Slugs: The Carnival Ride) is just a good old-fashioned 50’s monster movie mixed in with 80’s gore, the splitting headache scene is worth a mention of the film alone. A horror film you must take a look at once in your life.
