The Book of Eli, starring Denzel Washington as Eli, an older man wondering whats left of the world. Gary Oldman as Carneige, another older wise man looking for a mysterious book that has the power to gain control of the desperate and hopeful. And Mila Kunis as Solara, a slave owned by Carneige, who is intrigued by Eli . Albert Hughes (Director) delivers a futuristic film where the world has encountered a catastrophe of biblical propositions. Book of Eli is an action thriller which will keep wanting more.
Denzel Washington is sent west in order to fulfill his task; a task sent to him by God. In a world where supplies is difficult to come by. We join Eli on the part of his adventure where he comes across what seems to be a women in need of some much needed help, but she has a plot to rob the stranger as he would come closer to her a group of men would attack him. Eli is not tricked. Eli instinctively realizes the ploy and calls out these men and Eli makes short work of the large group of men. Eli continues his adventure down the road after witnessing a group bikers attack a defenseless women. Unexpectedly, Eli does not help this women he continues down the road. The story goes on to a town, a town owned by our antagonist Carneige. Carneige, shows a great level of respect for Eli and realizes that he has some knowledge.
Although a good movie with a great idea, there was a sense of relax during the film. The movie lacked any suspense due mainly to the fact that there was no climax. The entire movie was done alright but at no point was I on the edge of my seat watching the film completely devoted to it. Who is to blame for this? The writer, Gary Whitta. Whitta had such a perfect idea for a movie that could have been amazing but fell short with depth. The characters really did not show any emotion. There was a lack of frustration for the character of Carneige. There was a lack of fear for Solara and a lack of anger for Eli. Would anybody like to see a movie where the stranger is anything but quiet. I would have loved to see a punisher look to Eli, perhaps a messenger of God for sent to make the world a better safer place. This careless stranger is a good idea, but after movies like Waterworld and Resident Evil it is a little bit over done.
In no way am I saying that this movie was a failure. Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, and Mila Kunis acted wonderfully for what was written for them. They all played their roles very well. Particularly Washington (should we expect anything less). Denzel delivered as the quiet biblical man sent to do Gods will. He does not speak as much I would like him too but when he does speak he has a way of ignoring everyone else’s needs and just focusing on his task.
This film was an entertaining film. The action scenes done amazingly. The acting was very strong. And a great ending. But as I said it lacked depth, and a riveting climax. This movie would be a good movie to rent maybe purchase if you are a huge fan of Denzel. This movie would be a good choice for any action lover and anyone looking to watch a movie and not forced to think about it.
