Trailers: Devil

Will it be good? Will it suck? With an M. Night Shyamalan movie, I guess that the person watching is the only one able to tell, because the movies he makes normally have different things in them that one person thinks is interesting, and another would think “that is just retarded.” And so the trailer said that THIS M. Night Shyamalan was another mind-bending journey- but wait… M. Night only came up with the idea of it. He didn’t even write it. The Dowdle Brothers (The Poughkeepsie Quarantine) are set to direct, and the screenplay was written by Brian Nelson (Hard Candy, 30 Days of Night). So with this new information, we have new elements brought in.

1. Obviously, this movie is going to be much more violent than the trailer leads it to be.

2. The movie may suck, because if you are used to directing a slasher jumpy gore fest, how are you going to make a thought-provoking thriller?

3. They gave away too much in the trailer, making you know that a dude is electrocuted, two dudes jump off of a building, and the woman just goes CRAZY.

Plot: There are five people that go into an elevator, and as they ascend into the building, the elevator comes to a screeching halt, and the doors cannot be opened. They yell for help, but not even the firefighters can pry or saw their way into the elevator. Then, the camera starts to mess with the people that are watching to make sure they’re okay. Finally, you realize that the trailer says that “one of the people isn’t who they say they are.” And then it shows a couple of them dying via falling, electrocution (see above comments) and whatnot then it has a really cheesy scene where this black dude lights a flare or something and when he brings it up to him, there is something in the mirror. Then the title is slapped on it, and the trailer is over.

Best Aspects: Looks like it may be violent, and it could be very scary (if they do it right, which they almost never do). Also, the acting looks halfway decent.

Bottom Line: B. The movie may be worse (or, hopefully, better) but it is not going to be scaring many people, it seems, so America might have another Blair Witch debacle (though I liked the Blair Witch Project because it was just good).
