everyone is ranting and raving about this physcological thriller but i fail to see why everyone loves this movie so much. while i agree that the basic premise of the movie is very intriguing and interesting, there are just too many aspects of the movie that just happen without any explanation. its hard to appreciate a movie when it seems like they made it up as they went a long. it was an action movie stuffed inside an amazing idea for a movie. i was very excited to see this movie but was deeply disappointed when i felt like nolan was trying to confuse me more than show me a good movie.

Good review, I respect your opinion. But, Nolan wasn’t really trying to confuse as much as just make you think. The idea of the movie was fantastic, and the action sequences were excellent, and though you may have had difficulty seeing why certain things were even done because they were random and had no real affiliation with the story, well, Nolan likes to do that (see Dark Knight, Memento and Batman Begins). It adds substance to the film and that is really why I believe he did certain things. The events eventually made sense, because you had to think, okay, so that’s why that happened, but I think that the movie, obviously if you’ve read my review, is superbly fantastic.
Those things that you say happened for “no reason”, really did happen for a reason and you just missed them, which is ok…go see the movie again and look for subtle hints; such as certain phrases “Take a leap of faith”, take note of situations and who and what shows up out of the blue…and then ask yourself “would Nolan really be that careless with his filmmaking?”…
I just think you missed a bunch of key plot elements that Nolan purposefully hid.
but i feel like the movies you listed made more sense. while i agree there are moments at which your like okay so thats why that happened…even though the reason may present itself it still does not take away from how far fetched the reason is…just because it makes sense eventually does not mean its a good idea…but i will also agree that the action sequences were excellent making inception is one of the best movies of the summer if not the best compared to some of the terrible movies this summer….id even say its better than dicaprio’s other recent blockbuster shutter island…however i was disappointed after reading all the great reviews for inception prior to seeing it.
Well, man, to each his own. You’re the first person I’ve seen who has given it under 4 stars within the site. The thing is that people didn’t like it either because it didn’t make sense to them or the events in the movie seemed unnecessary and random. 1: If you are the brightest movie goer who wants pure action, then don’t go see a Christopher Nolan film because they are probably going to leave not knowing what happened because their attention was lost. 2: The events made perfect sense, to me, it was just the progression of the operation, and the people in the film explained the things to Ellen Page in the movie because she was essentially in the same oblivious boat as us, and as the movie went along, you saw why people were shown certain things and whatnot. Shutter Island pissed me off because the book was the best book ever, yet the movie had some terrible acting (Leo included, because one half of the movie he was from Boston, the other half he was from California via his accent, and it wasn’t because Laeta Whatshername intended to write it to allow the viewer to think “is he” because two minutes in I coulda called it without reading the book. I think it was one of Scorsese’s worst, but in Inception, Leo REALLY stepped up and wasn’t the same character he always is, kind of like his performance in The Departed, and he deserves Best Actor, in my opinion. Is the only reason you dislike it because some of the events were scattered and a bit confusing?
and it really was for a reason, Nolan would never, EVER be careless enough to just throw random things into the movie without purpose. And it may have been confusing, so you may have questioned it and just thought that it never made sense and had no purpose, but I assure you it did. Give me an example or two of instances where you were confused about the movie or there was something unnecessary in the film.
when they go inside the vault….why is it his dad? theres no explanation for why or how he is in the dream the scientist can see him too right ? also how did the scientist know to come back because the asian guy died ?…also why can the scientist impersonate the rich kids uncle? the entire aspect of going to limbo if you die under a sedative is random ? and how did those buildings get there in limbo…leo and his wife made it? are they the only ones to ever be there? and why is his wife there exactly? didnt she die in real life so she would be in heaven? or r u telling me shes in limbo cuz she didnt really die in real life cuz the top didnt fall over at the end? i was under the impression the ending was just to leave you hanging? i feel like i had a pretty good grasp on the movie but still found holes that turned me off from the movie…amazing concept for a movie but not the best movie ever
no, because the scientist didn’t design that part of the map, because the person has the information in there, and there is no way to tell what is in the vault. Eames came back because he was looking for them in there, and he noticed that the Asian dude was dying. Eames can impersonate the uncle because he can manipulate him only because he helped put the ability into the dream. He wrote that part of the dream, just like how he put the tunnel that led right into the base in there. And also, Eames isn’t the scientist, that Indian dude is. Eames is just the… I forgot his title. Going to limbo is more of a purgatory idea, and it is more of an introduction of a problem that can happen in the plan. More “oh, crap” than random. Those buildings were there probably because they were the last people to be in limbo before Leo and Ellen Page got in there. His wife is there because Leo’s mind created it because his mind was still imagining her, and also the whole dying thing is all subject to what you think the ending meant, which is why I think he made many of the events to allow the viewer to find the ending and not have a definitive answer. The ending was to leave you hanging, but it was more to find out than to leave you hanging. The Totum began to stager a little bit, so you know he is not in a dream, but I think he was in his own subconscious so that he could live in perfection for the rest of his life. The reason that it fell, in that case, is because HE thought it was real. I thank you for your opinion, but I think that if you had just a straight up open mind and tried to grasp every single little detail and form a definitive opinion about what YOU personally think happened, then it would be better. It is obvious that he wasn’t in anyone else’s dream, but since he was killed in limbo, he was sent back, but I think that it was in his own mind. He could have also just been in reality, that makes sense too, but the point that got me there is that Michael Caine is teaching in Paris, so how is he staying with the kids? It is all about what you think in YOUR mind, which is EXACTLY what Christopher Nolan wanted. I guarantee you that though you didn’t like it that much, still, you will probably be wanting to see it more that me in the near future to just see exactly why you didn’t like it if these good reviews keep coming in. But, I’m just saying, Christopher Nolan is mainly doing it so that people will talk about it and not only keep seeing it, but will like it in their heart and will certainly respect it and him, though his respect should already be a given. But, yet again, I thank you for your opinion, and if you have more questions, for the love of God ask.
i agree completely that the fact that the movie can be interpreted in different ways makes the movie great and i think i need to see it again to fill in some holes that i missed. i still think some of the ideas and what happens are kind of a stretch but i guess the hole movies a pretty big stretch. i appreciate your feedback and hope to debate on any other movies.
Absolutely, man, and if you ever need to ask anything, comment on a post and I’ll certainly answer it. But yes, see it again, and if you do, I’m sure you can fill in the parts that you missed. BTW, I’ve heard that you can get reimbursed for the cost of the film. Do you know how to do that?
ive never heard that so i dont know…whats your opinion on The Town? the trailer looked good but i just dont know about ben affleck…thoughts?
I think Ben Affleck is a better director than he is actor, but he can act…he just doesn’t choose many rolls that showcase the fact. Him and Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker), should make for a very entertaining movie. If it doesn’t totally blow, it should garner some Oscar buzz in a weak year for great movies.
Affleck was good in Hollywoodland…my favorite movie hes in. but your right hes not a very good actor. i have liked Jeremy Renner ever since S.W.A.T. and the beautiful Blake Lively is in The Town as well. Im definately excited about this movie but i think they could have chosen a better name for a film haha
Gone Baby Gone was the shit, and Ben Affleck is impressive in both fields of the Hollywood lens, in front of and behind it. The point is that the book was hailed, and Ben Affleck is directing (along with a supporting acting job by Jeremy Renner) so I think that it will be very good.
These comments are proof that the movie achieved exactly what it intended. A big lively debate forcing everyone to watch this movie and then watch it again to prove a point. I love this movie and the way it gets people worked up.
You are completely right, Tyler!! I was so in love with this movie when I saw it, I immediately placed it in my top 10, not something I do lightly!! Inception is ranked #8 for me, and on IMDB after over 186,000 votes, it is still #4… a true testament to its quality. Chris Nolan is sure to direct anything he wants on any budget he wants after this, which I am incredibly excited about… After all, imagine if he’d been allowed to do Memento or Insomnia on a bigger budget!! And I feel that this reaction and debate is exactly what Nolan wanted… the fact that people are still debating over it proves that the movie gets in your head and stays there!
BTW, I’ve discovered another thing that will make everyone who thinks they have a definitive answer of the ending royally pissed. Please, if you own this movie, watch this part: the part where Cobb is running through Mombasa. Whenever he goes between those two walls, hit pause and do the pause watch, where you hit pause over and over and it slowly plays. You will see that, if you look past Cobb, he is squeezing through the walls that lead out to the beach of Limbo. If you don’t think this is accurate, I urge you to watch that part, and you will see what I mean. It pissed me off so much, but it allowed me to reach my ultimatum of the film’s ending.
