Ana on “An Education”

“An Education”Director: Lone ScherfigRelease Date: October 8, 2009Starring: Carey Mulligan, Peter SarsgaardI never even heard of this movie until I was watching award shows for the 2009 year and saw that it had been repeatedly nominated. So I finally checked it out! This movie also lived up to a lot its hype. It was very well made and very enjoyable. I am in love with Audrey Hepburn and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and Carey’s character, Jenny, portrays much of her similar style. The movie takes place in the 60’s in London. A young girl who is an excellent student with a bright, and unfortunately boring, future ahead of her. Until she meet this man who easily twice her age and slowly they start to fall in love. Because he is wealthy he shows her the finner things in life and that there is a whole world out there waiting for the two of them to explore. Although there is a considerable age difference he asks her to marry him. Her parents some what reluctantly give the ok because he is able to provide her with a life that they cannot. One with money. She finds out later that he is a lying scum bag who is married with children. So they break up, but since their engagement she had dropped out of school and not taken the exams required of her to graduate so her whole life and all of her future plans were thrown away. She is left with nothing. After shunned most people who she needs to have her life on track she is forced to reconcile with them to have a chance at her old life back. She slowly works through everything and works her but off to graduate and get accepted in to Oxford. Like originally planned.I really like this film in some ways but not so much in others. I don’t like it because it reminds me of movies like “Juno” that leave us to believe that all men are scum until proven otherwise. But at the same time it like it because like the movie “500 Days of Summer” it reminds us that Love is not always sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes you have to fall flat on your face before you get swept off your feet. As far as the acting i thought it was great, I loved the cinematography as well! I recommend this movie to those looking for a light hearted drama or even romance with an unromantic ending I guess. I give it a 7/10!Ana
