Top 5: Joel Schumacher

Joel Schumacher has made some pretty bad movies in his time (Batman Forever, Batman & Robin), but many (nay, most) of his films have been very good and entertaining. The director’s influence on film is uncanny and interesting, because he inspired a brand new Batman series because of how bad his was, and he inspired many modern crime dramas. My top five list is focused on the best films of this man, Joel Schumacher.

5. The Phantom of the Opera – Gaston Leroux’s novel-turned-play by Andrew Lloyd Weber was adapted into a fantastic film by Schumacher starring Gerard Butler, Patrick Wilson, Minnie Driver and Emma Rossum.

4. A Time to Kill – John Grisham’s first novel is turned into this powerful film about redemption in the deep south.

3. Tigerland – The story of soldiers training on a simulated battlefield to get ready to be shipped off into the actual war.

2. 8MM – The detective story that made Nicholas Cage a bad-ass… if only for a moment.

1. Flatliners – Med students interact with the dead. The twists are amazing and the way the film plays out is amazing.
