Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman, and Tobey Maguire star in Brothers, a film about a young soldiers life after being a prisoner of war. It gives you a look into modern day soldier’s lives. As a viewer I believe it shows Americans what our soldiers could go through, and how difficult it is to return to their normal lives after being at war.
Captain Sam Cahill (Maguire) is heading back to Afghanistan on his fourth tour of duty, leaving his family behind one last time. While he is overseas his family learns that his Black Hawk helicopter crashed, and the assume he’s gone forever. As Sam’s (Maguire) wife (Portman) and two daughters (Bailee Madison and Taylor Geare) grieve, Sam’s younger brother Tommy (Gyllenhaal) steps in to fill the dark hole in the family. Tommy takes the role of the man around the house and helps the family, while helping himself, move on, until they learn Sam is alive.
The acting in this film was phenomenal. I wasn’t expecting to like Maguire’s role, based on his recent films and his annoying nerdy demeanor, he wasn’t my favorite. I was surprised by how well he portrayed Captain Sam Cahill. Maguire made me feel a part of what he felt. As well as Natalie Portman, I couldn’t help but to feel sorry for her. Portman turned on the waterworks with a quick snap. It was by far the best performance ive seen from both Maguire and Portman. Gyllenhaal did a great job playing the bad boy brother turned good. He played the father figure role very well and he did a great job with showing his emotional side. One more actress that really got my attention was Bailee Madison. She did an amazing job playing the hurt and angry daughter. Madison is a rising star and I am amazed at how well she lived up to this role.
Overall I give this movie an A+. It kept me stuck to my seat from beginning to end. I wasn’t disappointed with this film in any way. The cast was perfect, the soundtrack was smooth and easy, and the plot was just incredible. Maguire, Portman, and Gyllenhaal made the perfect trio. As for Jim Sheridan, he did a great job directing this film. I will admit it was a very depressing and emotional film, but still worth the hour and a half. The story keeps you hooked and will most likely make a tear or two stream down your face.
I liked the film, but the ending really agrivated me because it just ended, and nothing happened. If something would have actually happened, it would have been better.
I get where you’re coming from. Most people will agree with your comment. I believe that the ending for this movie could be better but at the same time, I couldn’t have asked for more. It wasn’t all happy go lucky or some corny sappy ending. It ended with Sam finally breaking down, and it leaves you thinking there is hope for that family to go back to normal.
I felt the little actress, was amazing. She really impressed me with her skills at such a young age. I mean every time she had to cry the water works were on and she just blew me away.
For me she made me really enjoy this film.

Yes she was amazing. I was really impressed by her. I agree, this movie was even better because of her.
the ending was pretty damn corny. “I killed him” (tears, fade shot). WTF? She did add some extra goodness to this film, but I believe that Tobey Maguire, who I have thought of as a (explitive) of an actor really showed that he can act.
The ending was what i was waiting for throughout the whole movie. He admitted what he did-to me it wasn’t corny. He faced his problems finally. But i agree with you about Maguire. This is the only film I have liked him in, he finally made himself worth watching.
yes, but the ending could have just been better. A good movie, but nothing really wrapped it up. That is like making a murder mystery and in the end the head detective says do you want to look for him? and the other guys says “yes.” and the screen darkens, with a giant middle finger and an F-U on the other end.
Well I guess we have to argee to disagree. I liked it and you didnt. Thats that.
true. Sorry for carrying on. This film was a good film as a whole.
