This is a great science-fiction/action/adventure movie for movie watchers of all kinds. James Cameron, has many numerous, outstanding filmes under his belt and this one adds a crucial “notch”. It takes place around 2154, on Pandora, a fictional moon in a distant solar system. The main characters are Jake Sully, a former Marine who is in a wheelchair and a female Navi, Neytiri and are supplemented by a few key characters.
The main storyline centers around a group of humans who have come to Pandora in search of a very rare mineral. Pandora’s climate is bad for humans so they’ve created human/Navi hybrid bodies in which to “link” up with to move about the planet. The humans and Navi have already had contact and some of the Navi speak English. Parts of Pandora are opened up as Jake takes his assignment and moves out into the wild. He befriends Neytiri who finds him a nuisance at first, but over time she finds herself attracted to him. Colonel Miles Quaritch, who is the head of military force on Pandora gets tired of waiting for Jake’s success, urges a hostile move towards the Navi colony.
Pandora is a visually stunning representation of a world without contact from humans. Plantlife thrivcs and are abundant along with the wildlife, which are unlike anyone has ever seen. The people of this planet are in tune with nature and live peaceful lives, until the humans start showing up. The actors portray their characters very well, however some were given limited screentime for various reasons. Emotions run high and almost unihibited while at times they are low. The music is perfectly balanced with the scenes in which they are played, i.e. actions scenes have the faster paced music, while the serene scenes have the slow, but otherworldly calming feeling to them.
Overall, I give this movie 4 1/2 stars. The story was well written, but much of the background was not revealed during the movie. Its in no way confusing, unless one does not like these kinds of movies. Pandora grabbed my attention the entire time, with one scene leading to another. Pandora resembles what Earth could be like if we lived a similiar lifestyle to the Navi. I would suggest watching it in 3D as I have, the effect will be much greater.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see the movie in 3D, but I’m thinking about going to see it again. I went into this movie without very high expectations. Actually, I almost didn’t see it because of all of the hype. However, I thought the movie lived up to all the talk. Visually, it was amazing, but the story was also interesting. Granted, I knew the ending within the first fifteen minutes of the movie, but the ride was fun. It kind of reminded me of a modern day Dances with Wolves.
