Star Trek. Rebooting the Fanchise.

Director : JJ Abrams

Starring: Chris Pine, Karl Urban, Zachary Quinto, Eric Bana, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana.

Overview: Having always been a Star Wars fan, i never liked Star Trek. I thought it was tacky, uncharismatic and dated. So when i heard there was a new Star Trek being released, I didn’t think much of it because I didn’t like the previous installents. As the Hype started and trailers were released, I had a sneak peak, just to see. On first glance it looked revitalised and believeable. With an allstar cast I was hoping that all the hype wasn’t going to turn into a total dissapointment. Being the writer of Armageddon and director of Mission Impossible III, I thought having JJ Abrams on board was very promising.

The Story: Before James T Kirk (Chris Pine) was born, his father, acting captain of the USS Kelvin, George Kirk dies, saving his pregnant wife and 800 starfleet members, while on a mission in space, where they encountered a Romulan ship, ‘The Narada’ captained by Nero (Eric Bana) who starts attacking Kelvin and destroying it. The story follows Jim Kirk in his twenties as a rectless, but intellegent young man. Captain Pike invites Kirk to become a starfleet candidate, maybe to become captain of the USS Enterprise someday. Here he meets Spock (Zachary Quinto) from planet Vulcan. The sterfleet are assembled onto the Enterprise when they receive a distress call from Vulcan, shortly after a lightening storm. Kirk alerts Captain Pike, that this was a similar trap in which his father died and it may be happening again and advised Pike not to go. Ignoring Kirk, Pike Warps into a battlefield with Narada captain Nero. In a plee to save the planet Vulcan and his own ‘Earth’, the starfleet pull together as a team to try and defeat Nero and his army.

The Verdict: I have to hand it to Abrams. The reboot of the Star Trek franchise is absolutely brillient. The story was well thought of and was nice to see some of the original actors involved. If you are a Trekie fan i’m sure you’ll love it. If your not a Trekie fan i’m sure you’ll love it. As a person who didn’t like Star Trek, this installment in spectacular. Chris Pine potraying Kirk is funny, serious, intellent and charming all at the same time, making him one to watch out for in the future as I think he will have a promising career ahead of him. As for the special effects and revitalisation of the Enterprise, there is a huge improvement and a very high standard. I can’t wait to see the next one.
