Couples Retreat

Well, how do you write about a movie that had so much promise – then lets you down to the point where I think I felt a tear trickle down my cheek as the final credits rolled and realized that this movie… was not that good!

I don’t get it!  The cast was such a draw…  Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman (Who I’ve always harbored a crush on since childhood and unfortunatly was pretty one dimensional in this flick), Jon Favreau (who also wrote this…  piece of I’m not sure what), Kristen Davis, Kristen Bell, Malin Akerman and JEAN RENO (who is soooo underused and in a character almost anyone could have played)!!  Ohhh, and the scenery (I now really, really want to travel to Bora Bora…).

Couples Retreat is about four couples who travel to an all inclusive resort so as one of the couples can work on their marriage through a couples skill building program.  The other couples quickly realize however that to stay at the resort at the cheap group rate, they will also have to participate in the couples counselling.  As formulaic of a script as you can possibly… write (Jon & Vince, really guys, this is the best plot you could come up with?), the other couples all begin to see the cracks in their own marriages/relationships.

This movie isn’t completely terrible.  It does have it’s very funny moments and the banter between Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau never gets old (for me anyway).  There is also some strong dialogue from time to time and the ‘therapists’ are hilarious (John Michael Higgins and Ken Jeong in fabulous cameos) and even ‘Salvadore’ (a scene stealing Carlos Ponce) is pretty funny as the yoga instructor and basically younger version of Fabio, only with more personality.  The running time however is a wee bit too long (we really didn’t need a ‘Guitar Hero’ competion – I see it every year…  at my holiday staff party!) at around 110 and could have definitly been cut down… to 90!

If you are looking for a light, non thinking, predictable ending, sitcomy type movie to go see, then by all means… rent it.  Just don’t expect anything great from Couples Retreat because you will be sorely disapointed.

  1. I watched this last night with my wife – and throughout the movie we couldn’t stop laughing!

Yeah, I have to agree that the guitar hero scene was a bit out of line and unnecessary – we gave each other the “one-eyebrow” look.

I though the ending could have been more “realistic” like at least that one couple (you know who!) would break up the marriage because they are just so not into each other.

Overall, though, it’s a funny movie and we don’t regret watching this “chick flick” – 3.5 stars!

  2. I didn’t completely dislike and did find cheap funny out of it – I just expected so much more out those guys! Swingers was brilliant and it seemed to just down ward spiral from there. With Jon’s directorial success, you would think he would be able to come up with a better script – I don’t blame Jon for wanting to do some lighter fair after Iron Man however did he have to be so predictable with it? ;( That was my only problem, I walked in expecting (I should know better not to expect, it usually leads to disappointment) lol! I just noticed too that I meant to hit 3 star and must of accidentally hit 4 as it wasn’t a 4…
