Directed by Rueben Fleischer, Zombieland is a post apocalyptic comedy. Right, I didn’t think those two could go together, but here they are and it is a really fun time. Who knew?? The stars of the film are Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin. While this is a comedy, be warned that it is also a gore fest. Viewer beware!!

After the world has been devastated by a disease somehow related to mad cow disease those that are infected have turned into zombies who want to eat the flesh of those that are still living. Two men who have struck up a friendship are trying just to survive the mess they find themselves in. Columbus, who is a mid-west kid, lives by certain rules to survive in Zombieland, while Tallahassee is a gun shooting fly by the seat of his pants kind of guy. Columbus wants to get back home to Ohio while Tallahassee just wants to find all the Twinkies that are left in the world. While looting for Twinkies, the two guys run into Wichita and Little Rock, two sisters on their way to an amusement park in California that they heard was zombie free. After stealing the guys Cadillac, the sister head out and Tallahassee decides to catch up to them. Once they do the girls get the drop on them again but decide to let Columbus and Tallahassee ride with them. Once in California, the four of them find their way to Bill Murray’s house where they crash for a while but the girls must make it to the amusement park.

The first thing about this movie you will notice is that as the name implies there is a lot of gory stuff. The makeup effects in the film are one really well. You get to see just about every type of zombie in this movie that you can think of. The kill scenes have been very well thought out. Some of them are booby traps that living humans set for the zombies while others are impromptu kills that were just done to survive. The zombie kill of the week was a hilarious side step. Very funny stuff there.

The stop off at Bill Murray’s house was unexpected but as you can imagine, it adds to the fun. While I know that there were others that were asked to do cameo shots for the film the only one I saw was Murray. It would have been nice to see other actors able to spoof themselves. Oh well, guess that just means that Bill Murray is the bigger man here. As for the plot, it was fairly original starting out but fell into the typical from the point after they left Murray’s house.

Because Zombieland was such a fun run for me, I’m giving it 4 stars. While most people will watch this for the comedy, the real reason I watched it was for the gore. I’m not a big comedy fan and usually leave those for rentals once they come out on DVD, however this one I had to see. One other word, it foul language turns you off as much as gore does then you might want to skip this one too. Not one for the kiddies by any means. Who knew that surviving the apocalypse would be so much fun??
