Movie and Film Reviews (MFR) Action The Bourne Ultimatum

The Bourne Ultimatum

“The Bourne Ultimatum” is the third and final movie in the trilogy. Matt Damon is back as Jason Bourne.

“Ultimatum” is better than “Supremacy”, but not quite as good as “Identity”. The first one had a different director than the last two and it was cinematically much better. Damon almost didn’t come back to the third film because the second one did not do so well in the box office. But it was a good thing that he did.

The problem that I had with “Ultimatum” was the same problem that I had with “Supremacy”, it was too handheld and not steady. The shots were too jumpy and you could hardly see what was happening on the screen. It was a little sickening. If the director had toned down the handheld shots, expecially during the car chases, I think that it might have been better than it was.

Damon was just as good in this one as he was in the other two. Damon is one of the only thing that was really good about this movie. The other thing that I liked about it was the fact that they closed the storyline and you found out who Jason Bourne really was and who erased his memory. I also was very happy to see Julia Stiles back. I thought she did a wonderful job, like she did in the other two films. Her role was upped and she became the leading lady in this one, instead of being the supporting lady. Stiles is great and makes this movie work. She is put into a lot of action packed adventures and pulls it off nicely.

I would recommend this film to anyone who likes Matt Damon and is very into the Bourne trilogy.

  1. I agree for the most part with this review. I too thought that the camera was a bit shakey, which was really annoying because this movie involves alot of detail and if you miss something it can leave you scratching your head about what is happening. However i did get the feeling that maybe the director used this technique because he wanted us to feel as if we were part of the chase also.

I loved the return of Julia Stiles and the insinuations that there might be some kind of romance blooming between them. Plus i think she is much better suited to ‘out in the field’ activities than stuck in an office on a computer.

I agree that this film is way better than Supremacy but not as good as Identity. Compared to this installment, Supremacy seemed to be a kind of filler in the story line and at the same time it lacks the sleek mystery of Identity. Maybe it’s because we know more about Bourne in Ultimatum than we do in Identity but then how else would the film be able to reach such a dramatic climax.

One last feature that really enjoy about these movies is the fact that although Bourne is portrayed as some kind of super skilled man machine, there is always some individual who is equally as skilled. That means that you are always on the edge of your seat waiting for the one individual who will be able to take him out, even though you know you want him to win.
