“Mortal Kombat 2” was directed by Simon McQuoid, is based on the popular fighting video game franchise of the same name & serves as a sequel to 2021 film, which was also directed by McQuoid. The film sees Jessica McNamee, Michad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Lewis Tan, Chin Han & Hiroyuki Sanada all return to their previous roles but are also joined by newcomers such as Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Tati Gabrielle & Martyn Ford. Despite the mediocre success of the first film, Warner Bros. green lit a sequel that began production in 2023, however due to the SAG-AFTA strike, the film wrapped production in 2024 but didn’t hit theaters until May 8th, 2026.
Following the events of the first film, the realm of Earth needs a new champion to defend it in a fight to the death tournament. Lord Rayden, (once again played by Tadanobu Asano) assembled a team to face Outworld’s invaders following the death of Kung Lao. The team consist Liu Kang (Lin), special forces officer, Sonya Blade (McNamee), special forces Major, Jax Briggs (Brooks) and former MMA fighter, Cole Young (Tan). The elder gods select Johnny Cage (Urban) a former martial arts champion turned Hollywood action star. Cage immediately dismisses the invitation until he’s confronted by an Outworld fighter, Princess Kitana (Rudolph). Despite having the edge over Earthrealm, Outworld has every corner cut off with hidden pieces in place to either win the tournament in order to conquer it or just invade and take it by force. The tournament takes a darker turn when the evil sorcerer, Shang Tsung (Han) he hatches a new plan to take over Earthrealm & Outworld with a mystic artifact which then summons, the hell spawn warrior known as Scorpion (Sanada) to aid Earthrealm from beyond the grave. With the fate of the world on the line, Earthrealm must come together and unlock all their hidden potential to save the world from these evil invaders.
In the 2021 film, the biggest problem was that our main character in the movie was not a chapter from the video game and came across a studio plant which almost ruins the movie. Almost immediately right away, this film corrects that problem by introducing 2 new protagonists who are not only fan favorites of the game but have great character arcs and depth which is what sorely lacking from the first film. This was a great film and did a great job bringing the brutality of game and mixed in with some great movie magic. Karl Urban nails it Johnny Cage. He’s both charismatic & vulnerable, which really brings a new type of depth to him which wasn’t apparent in the 1995 film. Linden Ashby did a great job in the 1995 film as Johnny Cage but Karl Urban was a much different approach. I was surprised that Urban was casted as Cage due to him being much older than most of the cast already. With this new approach, it made more sense to go with an older actor, much when Warner Bros. casted Ben Affleck as Batman. Urban gives a great performance and really bought some needed star power to the film. Another great performance was Adeline Rudolph as Kitana. Her arc was pulled straight from the game & her performance bought incredible depth to the character. You feel her pain, anguish and hope and that has a lot to do with Rudolph’s performance. She has great chemistry with Tati Gabrielle who plays Jade. This film was a good enough to leave behind the entire previous film’s problems and gives a solid film which will be great for fans of the game but also casual moviegoers. You can watch this film & skip the 2021 film and not miss a beat.
At the time of this review, a third film is already in development with keeping the same writer & director. the 2021 film had 3 or 4 different writers but 2026 film, Jeremey Slater is the sole writer on the script. No further updates for any future projects with this properties. The video games franchise has released over 20 games from 1992 to today which can lead to its own cinematic universe with movies and streaming series.
