Repo! The Genetic Opera (DVD)

Paul Fischer of Dark Horizons describes Repo! The Genetic Opera as, “Stunningly original… A mind-blowing experience”. You know what? He’s 100% correct. With an all star cast of Alexa Vega, Anthony Stewart Head, Sarah Brightman, Paris Hilton, Paul Sorvino, Bill Mosely, Orgre (Of Skinny Puppy) and Terrance Zdunch as well as the producers of SAW we’re treated to what could possibly be, in my opinion, this generation’s Rocky Horror. The movie has an R rating due to strong bloody violence, gore, language, some drug use and sexual content.

Imagine a future where organ failure has become a worldwide epidemic. A company called GENCO saw an opportunity and took charge, offering a payment plan for organ transplants. But with that comes a terrible price… If you miss a payment, they can legally repossess that organ thanks to a person called the Repo Man. A person known mostly only as a myth and as efficient a killer as you can find.

The story in Repo shifts between two major families; The wealthy and deadly Largos, family behind GENCO, and the Wallaces, an overprotective father with a terrible secret life and a daughter with the same devastating disease that killed her mother. How their stories unfold and we learn the ways they’re all connected is all told through catchy songs that you’ll have stuck in your head weeks, if not months, after seeing the movie. All the while we’re presented with stunning sets and backdrops that only accent the acting skills of those on the screen.

But enough of that, this is a review of the DVD afterall. For those that have been keeping up with Repo since before it was out in theaters the DVD is a huge letdown. Originally there were a handful of promo videos online showing the cast and producers describing the back-stories of characters as well as information about certain aspects of the film (how it started as a stage show and what exactly Zydrate is), not to mention the behind the scenes footage shot by cast members that could be found even on sites like Youtube. However, the DVD only contains two of these videos.

A complete list of bonus features is:
– From Stage to Screen featurette (A brief history of Repo’s journey from a stage show to movie)
– Legal Assassin featurette (Learn more about the Repo Man)
– Two audio commentaries: One with Director Darren Lynn-Bousman and cast members Mosely, Vega and Ogre. Then another with Bousman, co-creators of Repo; Darren Smith and Terrance Zdunich along with music producer Joseph Bishara.
– Theatrical trailer
– English and Spanish subtitles.

Repo! the Genetic Opera is simply one of my favorite movies of all time. It’s a rock opera with catchy songs, a great plot and it only gets better the more people you watch it with. The story sucks you in and the actors seem perfect for the roles given to them. It’s only sad that Lionsgate did so little to promote it and rushed the DVD while the creative team were out getting to meet the fans during their road tours. It’s no doubt that this will/is a cult classic and hopefully someday we’ll get the DVD a film of this magnitude deserves, but for now what we have will do. Who knows, with the movie part of a planned trilogy maybe there will be enough fan support to grant the sequel and prequel needed to complete the Repo story.
