Diary of the Dead (2007) DVD

George A. Romero has directed several movies about zombies his most recent installment is the straight to DVD Diary of the Dead; a film about a group of students who are filming a horror movie for a school project when they hear of people getting up and walk after being pronounced dead. The group of students decide to jump in a Winnebago, pick up Jason’s girlfriend (one of the main character) and head home to several different towns in
Pennsylvania. Along the way Jason continues to film the events that are taking place. He tries to interview everyone in an attempt to help anyone who may be watching when he uploads the figure. Jason’s girlfriend Debra is narrating the film in several different scenes. Finally, the group gets to Debra’s home when she realizes that her family is zombies. The group decides to go to another friend’s house nearby unfortunately the friend has been bit and three more members of the group gone. The three that are left Debra, another student Tony and the professor decide to hind in a panic room till thing hopefully blow over. We’ll just have to wait for the sequel to be released to find out what happens to the remaining three.

This film was extremely interesting because of the narration, the narrator Mary presents two interesting point the fact that everything in the media has a spin and you never know what really the truth is. The second was the fact that everyone has a voice and is focused of letting technology rule their lives that we never really know if you can survive without technology.

Another element of narration that was very interesting came from the last shot two men who were shooting at the zombies as if you were target practice and one woman who had been tied to a tree by her hair, the two men shot her by the mouth and the narration questioned whether we   deserved to be saved.

This film surprised me when I first heard about it I thought that the film was going to look like Clover field where everything was in first person perspective and the camera was going to be shacking, but that was far from the case. The movie doesn’t even look like its being shot with a hand held camera and there is absolutely no shack so anyone who may get motion sickness you have nothing to worry about.

In classic Romero fashion he creates a film that leaves the viewer questioning what they’ve just seen many of his film have a message that’s more then just zombies biting people for food but, they question what we are as a society. I would like to think that I would be able to survive without technology as they did 100 years ago without text messages, without blackberries and without laptops.

I recommend this movie for fans of Romero’s work, horror movie fans and fans of movie in general it’s very interesting and has something to say.

  1. I SLIGHTLY AGREE WITH YOU “DIARY OF THE DEAD” IS A GOOD MOVIE BUT FILMING IT FROM A HAND HELD PERSPECTIVE I THINK IS TRULY LAZY. NOW I CAN UNDERSTAND MAYBE A FEW SHOTS IN THAT MANOR TO GIVE YOU THAT FEELING LIKE YOUR REALLY THERE BUT NOT THE WHOLE MOVIE.
I MEAN THERE WERE SHOOTS IN THE MOVIE WHERE I WANTED TO SEE THE SURROUNDING SCENE TO GET THAT FEELING THAT IM THERE LIKE THEY WANTED TO GIVE YOU BUT I DIDNT FEEL THAT AT ALL I FELT LIKE I HAD A STIFF NECK OR A NECK BRACE ON HE MOVED THE CAMERA AROUND BUT NOT SO MUCH THAT YOU KNEW WHAT WAS HAPPENING I HAD TO GO OFF WHAT THEY WERE SAYING AND DIDNT SEE WHAT HAPPEN IN A COUPLE SCENE. AND THE GUY PISSED ME OFF WHEN THAT GIRL WAS IN THE WOODS GETTING CHASED BY THAT ZOMBIE AND INSTEAD OF HELPING HER OUT HE CHOSE TO FILM THE WHOLE AND NOT ONLY THAT IT FELT LIKE THEY WERE TRYING TO MAKE IT A COMEDY SLIGHTLY. IT JUST DIDNT FEEL LIKE SOMEHITNG GEORGE WOULD DO I DONT KNOW IF THAT WAS HIS POINT.
I DIDNT LIKE THE MOVIE IT FELL IN TO THAT CATORGORY THAT DIRECTORS THING GIVING A PERSON A VIDEO AND LET THEM RECORD IS REALLY A MOVIE THAT’S CHEAP TACTICS AND POOR FILMING NO MATTER HOW YOU TRY TO DO IT.
I AM A BIG FAN OF GEORGE ROMERO BUT I DONT THINK THIS WAS ONE OF BETTER FILMS AND THAT GOES TO SHOW THAT IT WENT STRAIGHT TO DVD AND NOT TO THE THEATHERS. I WAS ACTUALLY EXICTED WHEN I HEARD ABOUT THIS FILM WAS COMING OUT I RESERVED MY COPY EARLY BUT WAS SADLY DISAPOINTED WHEN I WATCHED IT.
YET EVEN THOUGH HE DIDNT WIN MY GOOD GRACES WITH THIS FILM IM STILL A FAN AND WANT THE GEORGE ROMERO MOVIES THAT I GREW TO LOVE AND LIKE AND MOLE OVER WHAT I WOULD DO IF I WERE IN THAT SAME SITUATION.
ALL IN ALL I THINK ROMERO IS STILL A GOOD DIRECTOR BUT NEEDS TO COME UP WITH AN ORIGANL SCRIPT AND GOOD PLOT TO MAKE THAT CLASSIC ROMERO THAT WE GREW TO LOVE.
